Why social media is one of the best places to sell your art

Today we're going to talk about why social media is one of the best places to sell your art. With the rise of social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok, artists now have unprecedented access to potential buyers and fans all over the world. In this video, we're going to dive deep into the reasons why social media is such a powerful tool for artists and how you can use it to grow your career and sell more art.

Think about it - social media is where people spend a lot of their time these days. According to recent statistics, the average person spends nearly 3 hours per day on social media platforms. And when it comes to selling your art, the more people who see it, the better, right?

Now, I know what you might be thinking. Social media is a crowded place, with so many artists and creators trying to get their work seen. But that's also what makes it such a great platform for selling your art. With the right strategy, you can stand out and get noticed by the right people.

Collectors are spending more than ever on online sales, which is a trend that has only exponentially increased since the Pandemic hit.

So let's talk about some of the reasons why social media is so great for you so you can start optimising how to use the platform.

Tip #1 - Firstly, social media is free to use

You don't need to spend any money to create an account or start sharing your work. This makes it accessible to everyone, regardless of their budget.

Tip #2 - It's an extra portfolio out there

You can share high-quality images and videos of your work, which can help you grab people's attention and make a lasting impression. This is like having another portfolio and one that is so easy and quick to create that you don’t have any excuses as to not to do it.

Tip #3 - Insights into your market

Social media provides valuable insights into your audience and how they interact with your art. By using analytics tools, you can track your performance, measure your success, and make data-driven decisions about your marketing strategy. These data can also help you identify who your ideal client is, which is crucial if you want to increment your sales.

Tip #4 - Reaching your right audience

Instagram alone provides a global platform for artists to reach a wider audience. With over 1 billion active users, it allows you to connect with potential collectors from all over the world, regardless of their location. This is particularly important if you’re starting out your career, as you may not have the same level of exposure as more established artists.

Once you've identified who your ideal customers are, what age they are, where are they based, what are their interests, etc. you can look out for them on the platform. A good way to start looking for clients is having a look at your competitor’s followers, since, if you’ve done your competitive analysis right, their customers should then be your potential clients.

You can also find collectors by checking who is following art galleries or art advisors you like, then once you’re in their profiles you should filter who might be interested in the type of art you do just by checking what their taste is, if they’ve uploaded artworks with a similar style, concept or vibe as yours, etc.

A trend I’ve noticed in recent years and which has increased with the dominance of digital media in our lives is that collectors are now not only interested in the art itself, but also in supporting the career of artists. That is, they want to buy into your visual universe, your life, the relationship you develop with them, not just in buying a couple of paintings and that’s it. Collectors want to know they’re also supporting your practice over time and are satisfied with watching you grow.

In this sense Instagram provides an amazing opportunity to build a community of collectors and followers who appreciate your work and your overall practice. By engaging with your audience and sharing your creative process, you can build a loyal following that will support you and your art over time.

Tip #5 - It's one of th best sale funnels out there

Through social media you can ask people to sign up to your email list, and drive sales through that to my website to purchase.

The ‘where’ is the last piece of the puzzle - Selling is knowing first why you make your kind of art (big question which needs an in depth answer), who it is for, and marketing to them in the places they like to go, being there then sending them where you want them to buy from. Make yourself known, you don’t have to find your collectors, they are always looking. Put your work where they are looking.

So there you have it - some of the reasons why social media is one of the best places to sell your art. But of course, there are some downsides too. It can be overwhelming to navigate the various social media platforms and find the right audience for your work.
