The 3 things new artists should focus on to get started in the art industry

Starting a career in the art industry can feel like a maze. You've got the passion and the talent, but where do you direct your energies first?

After working closely with countless new artists, I've pinpointed three non-negotiable areas every new artist should zone in on, once they've honed in a distinct artistic identity, fostered genuine industry relationships and mastered the art of presenting their work effectively. The following core principles aim to streamline your approach and offer clear direction as you navigate the early stages of your professional journey, allowing you to build a resilient and thriving art career.

Tip #1 - Marketing Yourself on Instagram

First off, let’s talk about Instagram - a powerful tool for artists worldwide. Here’s my number one tip - spend 70-80% of your time marketing yourself on this platform. Yes, it might seem like a lot, but Instagram is a game-changer. It's not just about sharing your art; it's about building a narrative around your work, your process, your inspiration.

Post regularly, engage with your audience, and be consistent with your branding. And remember, always use high-quality images - you want to show your art in the best possible light.

Another important aspect of Instagram is networking. Connect with other artists, galleries, and art lovers. Participate in art challenges and use relevant hashtags. This exposure will not only bring your art in front of potential buyers but also inspire and help you grow as an artist.

Tip #2 - Participate in shows

Now, let's talk about art exhibitions and projects. Aim to participate in as many as you can to build your portfolio. I know, the allure of a solo show is strong. But remember, this is a marathon, not a sprint. Solo shows will come in due time. Right now, focus on group shows, local fairs, online exhibitions, art festivals, brand partnerships, etc.

These projects not only offer an opportunity to showcase your work and get noticed but also provide invaluable experience. You'll learn how to prepare your work, interact with viewers and fellow artists, and even handle critiques. Plus, you'll start building a network within the art world.

Tip #3 - Build a professional website

Finally, it’s essential to have a professional website. Your website is your online portfolio, your own personal corner in the vast digital world.

Invest in quality for your website - hire a professional photographer for incredible exhibition shots, find a mentor or artist consultant like myself, or connect with a more experienced artist for guidance. You’re not just showcasing your art; you’re showcasing yourself as a professional artist.

Include an 'available works' section on your website. Make it easy for interested parties to view your art and know exactly how they can purchase it. A direct payment link can streamline the process and help close sales.

In conclusion, kickstarting your art career is all about building a strong foundation and learning as you go. These three core strategies are like your roadmap to success, guiding you every step of the way.
